What is the preferred GCC version 3.x or 4.x

I am looking at updating our current gcc-3.3.2 to the latest version. I am
unclear if I should go to the latest 3.x release or 4.x release.
 
I would assume since 4.x has been out for quite awhile that it is ready for
prime time usage.
 
Can someone shed some light to help make this decision.
