Thanks Brian. Another user suggested the same thing. This all started with a bitbake build, which is hanging on a build of glib-2.5; so I tried to install glib-2.5; it said my gcc was too old; so tried to install gcc; it said it was unhappy with ld; thus my question. Hopefully, the new binutils install will allow me to unravel the whole chain.
