failed to compile gcc 4.1.1 on Solaris 10 with AMD Athlon

I'm trying to compile gcc 4.1.1 on my Solaris 10 machine. The processor is an AMD Athlon XP 2000+, which is a 32 bit processor. However when I try to build gcc it tries to build the AMD 64 bit version. I've tried various --with-* options to convince it to build the 32 bit version, but either configure or the build process rejects them, returning an error message saying the 64 bit version can't be built with those options.

I'd appreciate any help with this. I'm just trying to get a working Fortran compiler so I can use BLAS/LAPACK.
