System Hangs during installation

Hey guys,

My problem is that:
I was actually trying to install gcc by:

unpacking the gcc tar file
creating a new directory objdir
and doing ../configure
and make bootstrap

but the system seems to hang up after some time during
the make bootstrap... any small details that i am
missing here??

My ultimate aim is to install gcc onto a powerpc board
which has very little RAM. i am trying to first
install gcc on x-86 (with powerpc options) and then
trying to copy these files on to the board.

Is this the correct approach..??

Thanks in advance and sorry again for troubling you
guys..

-Vijay
