error: static declaration of '...' follows non-static declaration

Hello,

quite a few programs I am trying to compile fail with errors like:

error: static declaration of '...' follows non-static declaration

The mailing lists of the respective programs do not seem to know of the 
problem. Is it maybe a gcc thing?

I am using:
Fedora Core 4 with all packets updated
gcc 4.0.1
