unsupported relocation error when compiling for thumb

I'm getting an <x-tad-smaller>internal error: unsupported relocation error</x-tad-smaller> when I compile my project for thumb but no problems when compiling for ARM mode. It seems a while back somebody was having the same problem.

binutils 2.11.2
newlib 1.10.0
gcc 3.3.2
