problems updating binutils

i tried to update my binutils - and it works so far as i am compiling as a user and not as root.
for example if i am compiling as user the new ld - version is used, and that is OK. but if i try to make fe. a 'make install' the old ld version is used - and this is not okay.

silly as i am - i deinstalled the old binutils version via my distri - but the result is i couldn't even make a 'make' for the new version.

can anyone help on this problem - ho to disable the old binutil version

i am using
SUSE 8.1
gcc 3.3.2
old binutil version : GNU ld version 2.11.92.0.10 20011021 (SuSE)
new binutil version : GNU ld version 2.14 20030612

thanks a lot

sepp
