This seems to be a packaging error of the vendor of the RPMs. As http://rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/rawhide/1.0/i386/RedHat/RPMS/gcc-3.3.1-6.i386.html states: * Wed Jul 09 2003 Jakub Jelinek <jakub@xxxxxxxxxx> 3.3-13 move cc1 to cpp package, so that cpp can work even when gcc and devel packages aren't installed you apparently would need to install / upgrade to cpp-3.3.1 also. Of course when gcc-3.3.1 can't work without the correct cpp package installed it should depend on even this cpp package. You may want to report that to Redhat as a bug.
