I have "Flash window when IMs are received" selected but I also have the message notification plugin enabled. In it I have notify for IM Windows. In tabbed viewing I often can't seen (other than the user changing to red) that there is a new message. Also, if the tabbed viewing pushes the user out of the main view there is NO WAY to tell if they've sent you a message.
