Summary: Alt + 4-digit num-pad codes?

Initial Comment:
I'm surprised I didn't find this already posted.

In most proprietary messaging clients, you're able to
use alt-key codes, for example: Alt+0233 (on the
number pad) will give you "é" (accented e). Since
the alt-key in GAIM will take you to a conversation
tab when used in conjunction with a numeric value, is
there a way one can "escape" this behavior? Is there
another way to insert these codes without copying and
pasting from a separate source? Thanks.
