Summary: GAIM gives message "Disconnected"

Initial Comment:
GAIM used to work fine, then, just randomly, it
stopped. Every time i try to connect, it says
"[username] disconencted: Disconnected." I can connect
with AOL Instant Messenger, but not GAIM. Tried
upgrading to new version, same problem. Tried beta,
same problem. whats wrong???

ok..i feel like a fool. The problem was that i had
mismatched GTK versions installed. The one that came with
the windows binary wasnt the one that was installed. After
uninstalling both gaim, and gtk, then reinstalling gaim
beta, and using the gtk it comes with, it worked fine.

I had a similar situation, Gaim just randomly stopped
working, but AIM worked fine. Other programs also slowly
seemingly spontaneously stopped connecting to the
internet. What I eventually found out was that although I
had the Zonealarm [firewall] program closed, it was merely
the frontend and the actual firewall itself was still
running in the background. So I must have updated Gaim in
some way and broke it, but without the frontend, I was
unaware of the situation. Long story short: check
firewall settings.
