Summary: Gaim fails silently on startup (XP Pro SP2)

Initial Comment:
I'm running Winx XP Pro with service pack 2. I just
downloaded and installed the very latest GAIM (1.3.1)
and GTK. The installation went fine, no problems. But
when I try to start GAIM, it just... doesn't start.
The hourglass flashes for a few seconds, and then...
nothing. No errors. It just doesn't start. I checked
the GAIM directory and found no log files or errors. I
checked the FAQ and found the section on "DLL Hell",
but it only mentions it and doesn't say anythimng about
what to do about it, and it seems the problem has been
worked around in recent versions.

I downloaded the debug version of gaim, but when I run
it, it give an error about "NTVCM CPU illegal
instruction". I have no idea why GAIM would be trying
to run in 16-bit DOS emulation mode. I tried searching
the web for answrs, but it's hard to search on...
nothing. Is there any way to get GAIM to make a log file?

Any help would be greatly appreciated! I love using
GAIM on my Linux box at work; I want to use it at home,
too (I only use Windows at home as a shell for
launching games ;)

Thanks...
