The only time fontconfig fails to match is you have exactly 0 fonts in its way.

fail to return a match. Failing everything else, it always seems to
return DejaVu Sans, at least on my Debian Unstable system.
So perhaps you should always make at least that font available as a
(close to) universal fallback.
