I posted it, but in the end it seems I wasn't enough bull for the job. (And with it now probably removed your chances of achieving anything in this matter too.) To be more precise, the tenor was that it'd better be handled in the text layout/toolkit layer. I think it's a valid point, as I've just tried and found that even plain old XftDrawStringUtf8 seems to do a better job than .. er, these toolkits. (I think it uses XftFont's max_advance_width to determine spacing for fixed-width fonts which is unaffected by the individual FT_GlyphSlot_Embolden results.)
