It looks like it works ok if you have previously done a build in srcdir, but if srcdir is clean, it fails for me. This seems to be because the func.refs target in doc/Makefile.am makes symlinks to the .sgml files in the srcdir, which happens after the .sgml files have been generated in the builddir.
