FcFreeTypeQueryFace - why need parameter file?

Why file parameter need for FcFreeTypeQueryFace (const FT_Face  face, const FcChar8  *file, int id, FcBlanks *blanks)? As I Understand this function may create FcPattern via FT_Face (from already loaded font).

What can I do if I don't have file on disk - only in memory?
