[Fontconfig] fc-cache sometimes fails

fontconfig 2.4 branch, CVS snapshot from yesterday.
It's easy to reproduce like this:

    mfabian@magellan:/tmp/test$ ls
    mfabian@magellan:/tmp/test$

(no fonts here, just for testing. It doesn't matter whether
the directory contains fonts or not).

    mfabian@magellan:/tmp/test$ fc-cache -v .
    fc-cache: ".": caching, 0 fonts, 0 dirs
    fc-cache: succeeded
    mfabian@magellan:/tmp/test$ ls
    fonts.cache-2
    mfabian@magellan:/tmp/test$ touch .
    mfabian@magellan:/tmp/test$ fc-cache -v .
    fc-cache: ".": caching, 0 fonts, 0 dirs
    fc-cache: failed
    mfabian@magellan:/tmp/test$ echo $?
    1
    mfabian@magellan:/tmp/test$
