I've found that low resolutions LCD screens (<100 dpi) look pretty fuzzy 
with anti-aliasing -- a friend with a 13" 1024x768 laptop has the same 
problem, sub-pixel rendering makes everything look quite colorful.

Fontconfig makes this possible precisely to let people choose what they 
want.  Both KDE and Gnome provide user interfaces to set all of this up.
