I downloaded the source RPM, but there isn't a clue on how to install it - I'm a python noob, so any advice on where to put the .py's would be great!

As well as virt-manager & libvirt, you need to install python-virtinst
which provides a higher level API around libvirt for provisioning guest
virtual machines. The mercurial repo is here:
http://hg.et.redhat.com/virt/applications/virtinst--devel
Or you can get the tar.gz from the src.rpm files in FC6.
