Thanks - that got me through the install and allows me to create an 
image.  I again started with installing the minimal system, started 
networking and installed packages to resolve "(EE)" errors in 
/var/log/Xorg.0.log but still became stuck with remaining error lines:

  	(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.
[  1016.485] (EE) open /dev/fb0: No such device

where /dev/fb0 does actually exist . .
