I followed the instructions here: http://linux-hybrid-graphics.blogspot.com/2010/07/using-acpicall-module-to-switch-onoff.html And they seemed to have worked - the laptop get now blessedly quiet, and the indicator light switched to indicate the integrated graphics. (The fan noise did come back after a bit, though.) The main issue now is the slow/flakey bootup, hanging for multiple minutes. Plus it hangs trying to shutdown.
