Was either of these updates (or ones prior) any cause to gdm not
starting and holding at cpuspeed coming up or something along those
lines during a reboot?  

I did another fresh install this morning, ran the updates to gdm and
accountsservices (both from koji) and right now it boots into gdm.  But
I haven't done a full update yet as afraid it might not boot again (and
that seemed to be no matter what run level).
