What I did was to use ctrl-alt-F2 to get a text console and then su - to become root - then did telinit 3 which seemed not to work (maybe systemd related or my ignorance!) Then did ctrl-alt-F4 and entered startx - this immediately gave me a graphical login - and into gnome shell as the liveuser.
