Judging from the forums, hplip might be broken. I've not been able to consistently prove that--in my experience, it would sometimes work, other times, it would print but not scan. In each case, when I removed it and then installed from source, at hplipopensource.com (using the manual install with tarball, not the wizard), it would work. (I might have had to do hp-setup -i <ip_address>, it's been awhile.)
