Actually, I've discovered a wrinkle here. The 'Basic video driver'
option isn't actually working right. For Radeons, it will result in the
installer using the 'radeon' driver, but with UMS not KMS, which will
indeed have unpredictable results: it could certainly work for some
people but not others.

I still don't understand why it's failing during install but working
post-install, though...

Still, let's track this in 596985. Please add your logs there, both of
you.
