If I couldn't get back into X to downgrade to a working previous edition, I would really be up the creek. Anyway, I logged out and back in, which should have automatically restarted X, n'est-ce pas? All seems well, as far as I can tell. I still have no desktop effects, but that was the latest updates-testing mesa that caused that. The last updates mesa worked fine with desktop effects, but I haven't bothered to go back to that version of mesa yet.
