The reason it would be using so much CPU is because the openGL is being done in software and isn't hardware accelerated. I know this is slowly improving but until we get HW opengl in the driver unfortunately there's not much we can do as the Moblin and gnome-shell interfaces both use mutter which uses clutter for all the nice effects.
