Some i915 laptops have had problems with the display going dark after lid close - see https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=489907 and http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=21230 which is the upstream bug. The system is still active, the screen has just gone back. And note that actual suspend/resume works totally fine (and the display comes back normally) for my system that has this problem.
