 fail2ban-0.8.4-23.fc11 (FEDORA-2009-9506)
 Ban IPs that make too many password failures
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Update Information:

This update redirects fail2ban's log to syslog. This also fixes and issue with
logrotate purging banned clients. fail2ban also checks inodes instead of just
the first line of a logfile.    0.8.4 is the first fail2ban release to work with
Python 2.6 (previous versions would fail with the "unexpected communication
problem" error message).    Additionally, the logging subsystem is now shutdown
when it  really is not needed anymore, which fixes the "cannot release  un-
acquired lock" issue.    The maxretry/findtime rate problem has been fixed.
This updates also carries some new features:    * A fail2ban-client command to
manually ban a specific IP for a certain jail (buanzo).  * Two new filters:
lighttpd-fastcgi and php-url-fopen (buanzo).  * Added actions to report abuse to
ISP, DShield and myNetWatchman.  * A Nagios script to help you integrate
fail2ban with Nagios. .

That does not help here.  Boot your rawhide installation into a
level 3 (just append a space and a number 3 at the end of your boot
command), or even into a level 1, and then check what dmesg has to
say.  Once you have a shell prompt then you can try, step by step,
to find out what really kills your machine.

Doing a runlevel 3 doesn't help, it doesn't start the Network or lsmod .

I did a level 3 in kernel-2.6.31-2 and it came up it can't find files in /lib/modules, so that is why it wasn't loading modules.I uninstalled this kernel and reinstalled.

And I got it bootup and to the point of this error message ;
 "Cannot open Theme file /usr/share/Kde4/apps/kdm/themes/Constantine"

There is no Constantine at that location that is why it can't get to the login.
 Window.

If I do a runlevel 3 , then I can do a  "startx" and get into Desktop.

Where is the file /usr/share/Kde4/apps/kdm/themes/Constantine  called from ?

/usr/share/Kde4/apps/kdm/themes/Constantine   is a Folder that holds the setup
files for the Login window , does anyone have this folder in the FC12 install , and could they please "tar" it for me and email it to me.

So I won't have to do a complete reinstall.

Subject: problems with current update 20090911
Greetings All:

Several things that are bothering me with the current update dated
20090910 and 20090911...

kernel-2.6.31-2.fc12.x86_64,  I am getting a kernel panic.  The
message is "Kernel panic not syncing VFS.  can't mount root fs ...
unknown block--hd(0, 0)

The latest xulrunner is not allowing me to open firefox now.  There is
also Firefox 3.6.3 out also...

Does any one know why the default constantine login sound file was
changed back to the same as Fedora 11?

Also why was the three- color bar put back in from fedora 11 too?  I
liked the circle that filled in and then flash the fedora symbol...

Can anyone answer these complaints?  BTW, this is the first time ever
in using fedora bleeding edge that I have gotten a kernel panic and I
have been doing this since redhat 6.....

Sincerely yours,
Rob G. Healey

Subject: mixing x86_64 and i686 packages???
Greetings:

This my first time having a 64bit system, so I am a newbie here as far as x86_64 goes, but not with Linux.  Fedora/ Redhat in particular!!!

I have noticed that there are a lot of software out there for Fedora, but some of it is only i686!  Like Opera and Adobe Reader in particular...  They list a ton of i686 dependencies when trying to install them.  Is it ok to mix x86_64 and i686 on the same system???

Sincerely yours,
Rob G. Healey

Hi Rob.  The 32bit library packages are designed to be comfortably
installed side by side with their 64bit versions. You can just install
them.

...Although, you'll waste disk space and memory keeping separate 32bit
copies around; everything in 64bit fedora is 64bit it's only when you
run third party binary-only applications that this issues usually
arises anymore. Perhaps it's another reason why you should think twice
about needing those applications?  There is free software more most
purposes, such as web browsing and PDF reading, and much of it comes
pre-packaged and well integrated with Fedora.

In any case— if you need them, they'll work. Just install the required
libraries.

Cheers.

Looks like a server error. Try multiple times with option -c, although
that will corrupt the downloaded file (but demonstrate that a larger
file is offered). It's reproducible here.

Also with "curl -C - -O ...", which shows behaviour like wget -c ...:

$ curl -C - -O https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-test-list/2009-August.txt.gz
 % Total    % Received % Xferd  Average Speed   Time    Time     Time  Current
                                Dload  Upload   Total   Spent    Left  Speed
100 43213    0 43213    0     0  33946      0 --:--:--  0:00:01 --:--:-- 46565
curl: (18) transfer closed with outstanding read data remaining
$ curl -C - -O https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-test-list/2009-August.txt.gz
** Resuming transfer from byte position 43213
 % Total    % Received % Xferd  Average Speed   Time    Time     Time  Current
                                Dload  Upload   Total   Spent    Left  Speed
100 2267k  100 2267k    0     0   490k      0  0:00:04  0:00:04 --:--:--  525k
$ gunzip 2009-August.txt.gz

gzip: 2009-August.txt.gz: not in gzip format
$ file 2009-August.txt.gz
2009-August.txt.gz: data

The first 43K is an uncompressed rawhide report (that alone is a server error
already). The second download attempt appends the compressed archive for August.

What you did is called thread hijacking and it'll guarantee that no one
(except me, apparently) will answer your question. Start a new thread with your detailed question and in the meantime type man mount in your terminal. Also, www.google.com will certainly be of assistance.
