This is due to default PolicyKit settings that do not allow you to do
certain things when logged in remotely. You can change the policy in
System ->  Preferences ->  Authorizations - of course, you have to do it
when logged in locally.


I added a policykit auth for remote root access.
The add/remove software behaviour is unchanged-
clicking apply causes dependencies to be resolved
but doesn't bother to install anything.
