Personally I find that gtkperf is useful although not an exact science.
I like to run it with the following options

gtkperf -c 500 -a

I find that my most of my machines (Intel G35 (intel driver) and Radeon
r500 (radeon driver)) run this in the 50-55 second range when
acceleration is working well, however my r600 based machine is around 40
seconds (radeon driver).
