Better way to update kernel on LiveUSB?

Hello,

I find testing pre-releases via LiveUSB to be very handy. The problem
is that the installation of new kernels is not caught by syslinux
since the kernel installation scripts assume GRUB.
I found the following instructions for enabling a new kernel on a
persistent LiveUSB stick:
http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showpost.php?p=1023695&postcount=7
It seems to work well and it is not difficult but hand-editing this
script doesn't seem like the best long term strategy.
Is there a simpler, automated or "official" way of doing this?

/Mike
