You no longer need the "linux" just the "askmethod". That is, you add
askmethod to the kernel line already in place.

That did it.  Thanks.  The blurb when you press F1 to F5 still talks
about linux askmethod though, which is why I was so confused.  I'll see
whether there is a bug against it or not.
