cd /etc/hal/fdi/information
wget http://ivazquez.fedorapeople.org/files/synaptics.fdi
(modify file to taste)
service haldaemon restart
(relog X)

That sounds too bizarre (and unique) to be strictly a software issue;
perhaps try updating your BIOS.
