Getting to runlevel 3, either with init 3 from runlevel 5
(if it doesn't crash) or by editing /etc/inittab, and then
giving init 5, causes at least two things to break.
1. The motherboard beeps on most keystrokes, but the keystrokes register.
2. Add software says the user does not have permission to do stuff
instead of asking for a password.
3. The sound device is not accessible by a regular user.
This is probably the same bug in the thread "weirdness going from
runlevel 5 to 3."

Backing out plymouth appears to solve the problem for me.
