For the time being I will just use the xfce desktop which > seems to be working. That didn't turn out to be the answer either. Eventually things broke, though not as hard as with gnome. At least one of my file systems got set read only. My theory now is that using desktop graphics is triggering a kernel bug. I am going to try out an older kernel and see if I can get it to work.
