I want to know as at the moment I am running rawhide on an old PII-400
MHz with 256 Mb and a cirrus graphic card about ten years old: and I
suppose that I am not the only one around...

There is no such definition besides that for GUI you need minimum of 384 MB of RAM to make it just work.
That's in the install guide which you should read before installing.

And I will suggest you to look into smolt.fedoraproject.org for the working hardware database.
