If you have ACPI video keys on your laptop, whacking them should trigger output rescan, I believe. In the glorious future, we'll notice output switch automatically because the hardware will tell us, at least for digital displays. This is really close to working last I checked. After that it's a small matter of making gdm notice the plug event and auto-resize, which I'm almost certain is code that doesn't exist yet. - ajax
