Hi. Here's one more report about kernel bootup errors, as I've had no luck with kernels more recent that the one listed in ${SUBJECT}. Below is the dmesg output for this working kernel, and things stop after the system identifies the CD drive. I've edited the output to indicate exactly where. The next kernel I tried was from an update about two days later, and that kernel and all subsequent kernels have frozen at the same point. A scan through this list suggests that the following bug report is close to what I am seeing: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=479525 Also, there is warning about a sleeping function called in an invalid context, but given that this kernel came out during the initial 2.6.29 merge window I'd guess that this issue has been identified and resolved. The machine running Rawhide is an older Dell Optiplex GX400, btw. =========================================================== Initializing cgroup subsys cpuset Initializing cgroup subsys cpu Linux version 2.6.29-0.18.rc0.git9.fc11.i686 (mockbuild@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx) (gcc version 4.3.2 20081105 (Red Hat 4.3.2-7) (GCC) ) #1 SMP Wed Jan 7 15:31:31 EST 2009 KERNEL supported cpus: Intel GenuineIntel AMD AuthenticAMD NSC Geode by NSC Cyrix CyrixInstead Centaur CentaurHauls Transmeta GenuineTMx86 Transmeta TransmetaCPU UMC UMC UMC UMC BIOS-provided physical RAM map: BIOS-e820: 0000000000000000 - 00000000000a0000 (usable) BIOS-e820: 00000000000f0000 - 0000000000100000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 0000000000100000 - 000000001ff77000 (usable) BIOS-e820: 000000001ff77000 - 000000001ff96000 (ACPI data) BIOS-e820: 000000001ff96000 - 0000000020000000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 00000000fec00000 - 00000000fec10000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 00000000fee00000 - 00000000fee10000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 00000000ffb00000 - 0000000100000000 (reserved) DMI 2.3 present. last_pfn = 0x1ff77 max_arch_pfn = 0x100000 x86 PAT enabled: cpu 0, old 0x7040600070406, new 0x7010600070106 kernel direct mapping tables up to 1ff77000 @ 7000-8b000 Using x86 segment limits to approximate NX protection RAMDISK: 1fc34000 - 1ff66b08 ACPI: RSDP 000FD6D0, 0014 (r0 DELL ) ACPI: RSDT 000FD6E4, 0030 (r1 DELL WS330 5 ASL 61) ACPI: FACP 000FD718, 0074 (r1 DELL WS330 5 ASL 61) ACPI: DSDT FFFE5022, 2474 (r1 DELL dt_ex 1000 MSFT 100000D) ACPI: FACS 1FF96000, 0040 ACPI: SSDT FFFE7496, 00A7 (r1 DELL st_ex 1000 MSFT 100000D) ACPI: BOOT 000FD7E8, 0028 (r1 DELL WS330 5 ASL 61) 0MB HIGHMEM available. 511MB LOWMEM available. mapped low ram: 0 - 1ff77000 low ram: 00000000 - 1ff77000 bootmap 00002000 - 00005ff0 (9 early reservations) ==> bootmem [0000000000 - 001ff77000] #0 [0000000000 - 0000001000] BIOS data page ==> [0000000000 - 0000001000] #1 [0000001000 - 0000002000] EX TRAMPOLINE ==> [0000001000 - 0000002000] #2 [0000006000 - 0000007000] TRAMPOLINE ==> [0000006000 - 0000007000] #3 [0000400000 - 0000fa7ea4] TEXT DATA BSS ==> [0000400000 - 0000fa7ea4] #4 [001fc34000 - 001ff66b08] RAMDISK ==> [001fc34000 - 001ff66b08] #5 [0000fa8000 - 0000fbe000] INIT_PG_TABLE ==> [0000fa8000 - 0000fbe000] #6 [000009fc00 - 0000100000] BIOS reserved ==> [000009fc00 - 0000100000] #7 [0000007000 - 0000072000] PGTABLE ==> [0000007000 - 0000072000] #8 [0000002000 - 0000006000] BOOTMAP ==> [0000002000 - 0000006000] Zone PFN ranges: DMA 0x00000000 -> 0x00001000 Normal 0x00001000 -> 0x0001ff77 HighMem 0x0001ff77 -> 0x0001ff77 Movable zone start PFN for each node early_node_map[2] active PFN ranges 0: 0x00000000 -> 0x000000a0 0: 0x00000100 -> 0x0001ff77 On node 0 totalpages: 130839 free_area_init_node: node 0, pgdat c086ea00, node_mem_map c1001000 DMA zone: 60 pages used for memmap DMA zone: 0 pages reserved DMA zone: 3940 pages, LIFO batch:0 Normal zone: 1858 pages used for memmap Normal zone: 124981 pages, LIFO batch:31 Using APIC driver default ACPI: PM-Timer IO Port: 0x808 SMP: Allowing 1 CPUs, 0 hotplug CPUs Local APIC disabled by BIOS -- you can enable it with "lapic" PM: Registered nosave memory: 00000000000a0000 - 00000000000f0000 PM: Registered nosave memory: 00000000000f0000 - 0000000000100000 Allocating PCI resources starting at 30000000 (gap: 20000000:dec00000) NR_CPUS:32 nr_cpumask_bits:32 nr_cpu_ids:1 nr_node_ids:1 PERCPU: Allocating 1359872 bytes of per cpu data Built 1 zonelists in Zone order, mobility grouping on.
