By chance maybe Atheros wireless might have bugs or have you had this running before? I had problems with realtek wireless before and was a real hassle (especially when the driver was real flaky on top of that) to get it going with NM. Had to manually get it going with network service and such. I would do as Jesse stated, and get the live-cd and use it and see if doing it from scratch works and then compare files/settings to get the installed working.
