I thought that one of the benefits of the kernel-based mode setting and reworked VT code in F10 was that one could still use Ctrl-Alt-<Fn> to escape even if X froze up. I guess I must have misunderstood because I just managed to freeze X completely (some combination of showing a flash video and switching desktops, probably hard to reproduce) and had to reset the machine to recover.
