Valid Partition Tables Can't be read by (some) Installers

Rawhide and Ubuntu 8.10 beta can't read the partition table on
my first SATA hard drive. Yet fdisk can read and write them
without problem.

Apparently there is some limit on the number of partitions the
installer's partition setup can deal with, or some other brain
damage.
