A reboot brought 'GRUB> ' prompt and that was it. Luckily enough this was an i386 installation and getting grub "manually" to boot was easy. After that it was possible to install grub once again and further booting was not an issue. https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=246830 shows troubles one would get into if that would be an x86_64 setup.
