Some googling found a few others with the problem, but it wasn't Gnome
specific.  I finally found an error message.

which:no soundwrapper in (then my $PATH).

Some googling's indicated that it is 64 bit specific, possibly related
to nspluginwrapper, however, others with the problem didn't have a
particular WM or DE that fixed it.
