Try another application like audacious ( yum -y install audacious )
And see if you get a sound from that application
audacious works, but rhythmbox and totem-xine do not. The startup
sound and the clicky noises on the mouse clicks are also audible.
The init 3 workaround does not help.

I looked in /var/log/messages and saw error messages about pulse audio
not working. alsa works fine.
