In /etc/, there's a directory called mplayer.  In there, there's a file
called mplayer.conf

About 5 or 6 lines above the last line, you'll see the line

flip-hebrew = no

Put a comment sign in front of it so that it looks like
#flip-hebrew = no

That fixed the problem for me.
