Dave,

I saw your blog about kernel modesetting for the i915 and above and I
wanted to try it out. So I made sure I had all the recent rawhide bits
and added i915.modeset=1 to the kernel command line. I also tried adding

options i915 modeset=1

in modprobe.conf

The kernel said this was not a valid option (kernel .234.) but ended up
trying to boot into something. X never came up and I had a lot of
messages like the data below in my messages file

I'm not sure where I should put this bug... kernel, i915 driver?

Without kernel modesetting X works fine, except for some minor pixel
corruption with the X cursor.

hardware is Intel G35 chipset
vga output disconnected
tmds-1 output is connected via DVI to a Gateway monitor and the X driver
does get the edid data just fine.

Please note that this machine (ASUS P55-VM HDMI motherboard) comes with
a VGA and a HDMI output, but since the HDMI doesn't appear to work that
well with the X driver. I got an SDVO ADD2 card to give me DVI and after
that everything worked fine. To the X driver the HDMI port (which was
seen as TMDS-1) disappeared when the ADD2 card was installed.
