No, when you click install it should 'immediately' apply that change.
It takes some time to begin the transaction and recheck deps, etc.

This could be the button flashing once per second between button press
and completion.
Feedback exists, you're not seeing it because the action must not be taking
place. The install button ghosts and changes to say 'Cancel' and the progress
bar (bottom right) does work during the transaction. The bottom left status
text changes as well.
You need to run 'gpk-application -v' and submit a bug if you're seeing nothing
occur.
