I run a vmware fusion vm with x64 and 1Gb ram (1Gb swap) and it works fine in most cases. The memory consumption is higher, but usable in that configuration. Generally, people using F9 are not going to update hundreds of packages at once as is the case with rawhide, so the enormous load you're putting on the machine is already atypical for general use. You might want to look at the memory footprint for updating 20 packages at a time and see if that works much better for you.
