  i, too, am starting to suspect the memory.  i just tried again (with
mem=512m), got another kernel panic (a different one this time), so
i'm ripping out that memory and starting from the basics.  and this
install seems to be progressing nicely.

  this memory is "A-data" brand, i'll take it back later today and
pick up another brand and see if that makes a difference.
